Although often listing works at prices from one penny to one shilling, sixpence often dominates publisher advertisements. This version of Paul & Virginia, a novel originally published in 1788 by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, for example, is one of many listed at the price of sixpence at the back cover, along with other newer works such as Scott’s Waverley.
