5. Pamphlet novelette

The pamphlet novelette is an abridged or adapted version of a novel sold at a price available to the working classes (i.e., sixpence or less). Out-of-copyright novels such as Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierreā€™s Paul & Virginia (1788) and new middle-class novels sold for 10-30 shillings or otherwise available at circulating libraries were available as pamphlet novelettes.
