A Copy of Verses

“Made on the grand excursions of Mr. Garnerin in his two balloons.”

Good people all, I pray draw near,
And listen with attention,
Of fresh excursions in the air,
I now to you will mention,
Monday, the twenty-eighth of June,
It was the very day, sir,
Monsieur Garnerin with his fine air balloon,
Fresh maneuvers did display, sir.

CHORUS:
From Randlagh up in the air,
Those are rangers did fly, sir,
Chelfes was crowned like a fair,
While shouts did vent the sky, sir

Lords and ladies of renown,
In their chaise and coaches flocking,
Snobs, Barbers, and tailors, left their perch,
Sweeps with neither shoe nor stocking,
They with colours made a noble show,
As they o’er London took their tower,
To Colcheller in Effex they did go
In three quarters of an hour.

CHORUS:
Since the open air, the doctors all declare,
Is so healthy as they say, sir,
Some men I am sure, we well should spare
Off in balloons to Botany Bay, sir.

July the third, you may depend,
At three in the afternoon, sir.
Ten thousand feet he is to ascend,
And then to quit his balloon, sir,
It will be a pleasing, curious fight,
At Lord’s cricket ground, kown well, sir,
In maneuvering these air balloons,
Garnerin does excel, sir,

Since such safety is in air balloons,
If we think Garnerin can believe, sir,
I think it cannot be too soon,
Catching tempers to relieve, sir,
Forestallers and regaters too,
Since its fine and pleasant weather,
I wish them no harm, I tell to you,
But all in air balloons together.
