Cheap editions of travelogues became widely available in the nineteenth century due to efforts such as Constable’s Miscellany, a multi-volume series that published affordable copies of new and standard texts. Original works like J. D. Sinclair’s An Autumn in Italy (Edinburgh: Constable and Co., 1829) were commissioned by the publisher and issued at a price point that appealed to downmarket readers. That Sinclair wrote with a broad audience in mind is suggested by his easy conversational style and by the range of his topics.
