17. In addition to his continuing composition of Irish Melodies, Moore also wrote many other poetic and prose works throughout the first half of the nineteenth century. His last long poem, The Loves of the Angels, was published in 1823, after which he concentrated more heavily on prose. Among his later works are a number of literary biographies, including Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1825), Byron (1830), and Edward Fitzgerald (1831). Moore also completed an expansive critical study of Irish history, ultimately compiled as the formative text, History of Ireland (1835-46). Through his illustrious reputations as a composer, biographer, critic, poet, novelist, and lyricist, Moore gained a broad readership and an active following during the nineteenth century. For contemporary readers, he remains an eminent Romantic writer and an important figure in Irish literature. This volume of The Pocket Magazine of Classic and Polite Literature (v.4: 1819) features engravings based on Moore’s Poems.
