Lessons for Little Learners

15. Mary Martha Sherwood was a prolific author of books, chapbooks and tracts, including many for the Religious Tract Society. She wrote stories intended to provide a religious education; she dissuaded youth from entertaining or immoral distractions and suggested that the poor may be closest to salvation. Little Henry and his Bearer (1814), which stresses Christian love, immaterial virtues, and the Bible, was one of her most popular longer works.
