12. Whereas early chapbooks served mainly as a form of entertainment, with some encouraging general knowledge and literacy, many later chapbooks were used for more specific purposes. The publication of the Second Catechism, as well as The Surprising Wonder of Dr. Watts in chapbook form are obvious examples of the popular dissemination of Protestantism.
