Although the first part of Pilgrim’s Progress was published to instant acclaim, with new editions following quickly and a second part added in 1684, Bunyan reached started to reach a far wider reading public in the Romantic period, in part due to the appreciation of influential writers such as Walter Scott, Robert Southey, Thomas Babington Macaulay and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, but mostly as a result of advances in literacy and print technologies, the expansion of reading and literary production, and the opening of new markets for religious and conduct literature.
