The Darton Family

2. Geological Sketches and Glimpses of the Ancient Earth (first edition 1832; this is the second edition 1835; 395 pp., 18.3 × 10.5 cm) would seem to indicate a rather erudite work for an author aiming for a juvenile audience but, as with other works published by Harvey and Darton, the publication carefully balances the dictates of instruction and delight. The dialogue form and detailed illustrations are tailored to a young audience. The author, Maria Hack, appears to have been a favorite with the firm. Most of her works reached a second edition; Winter Evenings and English Stories were still appearing in revised editions in the 1870s.
