People's Pamphlets

18. Chapbooks from about 1810, most of which were produced in London, some of which ranged in price from a penny up to a shilling, might include adornments such as decorative borders, a coloured title page, a hand-coloured frontispiece, or a steel-engraved frontispiece. Such later chapbooks varied considerably in content, theme and language. Some were adventures or tales of romance, others were overtly political; the use of dialect was not uncommon, particularly in chapbooks written for specific readers (e.g., in Scotland as opposed to England). These new chapbooks were usually from thirty-two to seventy-four pages long and cost from sixpence to a shilling.
