7. In July 1823, Byron sailed to Greece to assist the Greeks in their war of independence with Turkey, which had begun in 1821. While there, he caught a fever after being soaked in the rain during a horse ride and died on April 19, 1824. For his efforts in the war, Byron is still regarded as an illustrious figure in Greece. As one of the most enduring figures of the Romantic period, Byron and his poetry continue to captivate modern readers.
