Price Point

13. Price: 1s. 6d. per issue

Chapbooks were available above the price point of sixpence; they were often longer stories written for a highly literate audience, and including high quality engravings. Anything above one shilling, however, was for the most part beyond the limited financial means of the working classes. Such literature, aimed at the middle classes and other upmarket readers, included periodicals such as the Gentlemen’s Magazine, but mostly longer works or collections in single-volume or multi-volume book form.
