The first volume of George Cruikshank’s Sketches (1836) is an art book, or what might today be called a ‘coffee table book.’ The owner of this copy did not opt for the more expensive version (3s. 6d.) with coloured sketches, but the half calf, gilt-lettered binding indicates that it might have been well placed in the drawing room.
